An advertising representative, whom I was challenging regarding false claims in some of our competitors adverts replied “the double glazing business is full of smoke and mirrors”. I suppose in some ways that this response sums the lethargy that some of us have to check out what we are told as all too often we are trusting and accept people and businesses at face value.

Beware Imposters

Scotia has traded since 1983 and more often than ever we are being asked to provide third party, independent accreditation of our products and services. The companies providing these certifications stick their reputation on the line every time they recognise a company and their efforts to achieve these globally recognised achievements, however as a customer you must also be aware that claiming to have “a kite-marked product”, or claims such as “we work to Secured by Design standards”, mean nothing unless the company can provide you with paperwork from the assessing company, confirming that they have a valid award.

Ask to see evidence of Accreditations

Don’t be embarrassed about asking after all it’s your hard earned money that’s on the line and clearly you want to be completely satisfied that the company’s claims are genuine. Reputable firms who have taken the time and trouble to attain these certifications will be more than happy to gather together the information you require so please don’t think that you are being a pain.

Important and Credible Accreditations

Awards such as British Standard Kitemark for Windows (BS 7412) are one of the highest accolades that a firm can achieve. If they have achieved this certification from this world renowned organisation you can have confidence in your product as you know that to achieve the certification every single component such as glass, hinges, handles, PVC-u profiles, gaskets etc have been checked to ensure that they perform to the required standards and finally once all the components are built into a window frame before the complete product is tested to ensure that it is durable, secure and draught proof.

Ongoing Assessment and Monitoring

The approval does not end as soon as a company achieves this accreditation as the process of testing and assessment is one that is continuously monitored by these organisations to ensure that the company’s who have achieved these standards don’t immediately let them slip and in effect lower their quality once they passed the stringent tests. Their reputation relies on their members sticking to standards.

Peace of Mind for Scotia Customers

Our customers benefit because they know that it’s not just down to Scotia Double Glazing saying that our products are fabulous: they have independent third party assessment and testing which will ensure that they can have confidence in the longevity and performance of our products.

All our doors, windows, and roofline products are covered by these rigorous standards. Now we’ve put your mind at rest, take a look at our selection of products.

Choosing the Right PVC- u Door for your Home

Scotia have a fantastic range of PVC-u doors including patio doors, french (double) doors, residential doors and screens all of which are made to a high standard you would expect from one of Scotland’s leading door manufacturers.

Price isn’t everything

Many of our customers ask about the range as they have seen many of the advertisements saying that you can have a new PVC-door fitted for £395 and take this as gospel that this is how much these companies charge for their products. It’s often the case that people react to what they see on the surface and it’s only by viewing the proposition in more detail that the cracks are likely to appear.

10 year Guarantee – a meaningful one

Too often, customers spend their hard earned money on these products as the company gave a cheap price and a ten year guarantee, however, an all too familiar tale is that a couple of years after the product is installed they contact the company as they have a “10 year guarantee” and the product has a faulty panel or needs an adjustment, only to discover that the 10 year guarantee only covered the door profile and under the terms and conditions of the contract agreement no guarantee is provided on fitting, adjustments whilst panels , locks and hardware are only covered by a manufacturers guarantee which could be anything from 12 months to ten years.

Why Choose a Scotia PVC-u Door?

Our doors are fabricated from top quality 70mm depth, fully reinforced PVC-u profile. Both the outer frame and the door leaf are steel reinforced as this ensures that the frames have the required strength to withstand the very worst weather and provide a very high level of security.

The steel reinforcement is a key part in the design as this will ensure deflection of high winds and in better quality doors such as our own, this steel reinforcement is used as a robust fixing point for our high security locking system and hinges.

Toughened Safety Glass

Every glass door installed by Scotia will be fitted with toughened safety glass to both the inside and outside pane. Toughened safety glass is about 4/5 times more difficult to break and the process of manufacture means that it has to be cut to size for each individual order then toughened as it is too tough to cut. Clearly, this provides superb benefits such as added security and in the unlikely event of a breakage the unit breaks into small pieces, no bigger than a pea which minimizes the risk of a harmful accident to a family member.

Internal Beading

All of our PVC-u doors are internally beaded which means that intruders do not have access to the internally fitted glazing beads ensuring that you’ve no unwanted visitors.

Design Options – a wide choice

Our PVC-u doors also have a range of panel designs which provide a choice of over 30 different designs in over 5 different colour combinations with a complete range of obscured glass and decorative designs. All of the decorative panels fitted to our doors are permanently security glazed so that the glass cannot be removed and are included within the comprehensive 10 year guarantee that we provide.

Robust Security Features

The locking system fitted to our doors includes three robust stainless steel hooks, four roller cams and a centre latch providing eight secure fixing points in addition to three robust high security hinges.

Peace of Mind comes as standard

With a Scotia PVC-u door safety, security and peace of mind come as standard. Our doors are made, by us in our own factory, to a specification we determine and uppermost in our mind is the fact that we need a product to perform for us and our customer throughout the comprehensive 10 year guarantee period that we provide.

Our guarantee covers the product, the components and the installation for 10 years and the best guarantee in the business is supported by an insurance policy which protects your deposit and also your 10 year guarantee ensuring that your home, your loved ones and possessions are fully protected.

Our PVC-u Doors are available in the following colour options.

- White

- Rosewood

- Cherry

- Rosewood / White

- Cherry /White

If you decide to give your home a new lease of life then take a look at our fantastic range of PVC-U and Composite residential doors.

How do you know you can trust us? You’ve all read horror stories about cowboy glazing firms, customers being short changed or given poor quality products which only means additional expense to have the work sorted.

Scotia is bona fide, we’re on the level and you can trust us. Why?

Our accreditations are just some of the reasons why.

Scotia Double Glazing is proud to achieve Kitemark status on the majority of our products. We are also BSI Registered ISO 9001(meaning not only are manufacturing processes approved but also our installation) and we’re members of the Glass and Glazing Federation, an independent industry body that governs our industry and protects the customer.

This gives you peace of mind by ensuring that deposits are protected in the unlikely event of insolvency and if you’re not completely satisfied with the work , the GGF have a free conciliation service to help resolve any problems.

Top Tips for Choosing a Double Glazing Firm

At Scotia Double Glazing we believe in fairness and providing the best product for a customer’s needs. The double glazing industry has had a poor reputation and we want to do our bit to give some of the love back, show you that we’re not all bad guys.

We’ve got a list of our top ten tips you should take into consideration when choosing a firm to undertake work for you.

Tip No 10

Quality of Installers

Ensuring that you’re installer is has a wide and varied experience of installing replacement windows and doors is vital to ensure that you get a quality job on your home. Good firms, who are interested in providing their customers with a quality service will monitor their performance and be more than happy to arrange visits to previously installed jobs.

Tip No 9

Window and Door Security

The windows and doors installed in your home provide protection from the elements. Often customers forget that they also provide an important barrier for you and your family to unwanted intruders! British Standards Institute test windows to an “Enhanced Window Security Kitemark BS 7950” which tests to ensure that they surpass strict security standards. A similar standard PAS 023/024 is also available for doors. Protect your family, home and possessions by insisting that your supplier has achieved these approvals and can provides copy certificates as proof.

Tip No 8

Choose a Firm with Experienced Representatives

A tongue in cheek reputation precedes “double glazing salespeople”. It is like anything else in life, you find conscientious and knowledgeable people wherever you go and a key factor to ensure that you are fully satisfied with your product is getting the right advice regarding design, ventilation, fire escapes, cleaning, finishing etc. Chatting to friends, neighbours or relatives about their experiences should help point you in the direction of a good reliable firm with experienced representatives.

Tip No 7

Cost against Value

In today’s harsh economic climate value for money is of prime importance to many customers. Whilst it’s important to find replacement windows and doors specified to your needs more vital that you examine in detail what you get for your money. For example many companies provide a lower specification product for a lesser cost. It doesn’t mean that a more expensive company is ripping you off; it’s just that they have built more quality in to the finished product and service. Always make sure that you check the product specification and guarantee fully before deciding.

Tip No 6

Suppliers Close to Home

When choosing a company to install windows and doors that you are more likely to get a much better service from a local company who makes and installs their own products locally than you will dealing with a company who make their windows and doors three or four hundred miles from your home. You can’t beat the knowledge that a quality, local supplier will have regarding the performance that’s required from their windows and doors in order that you are completely satisfied with the completed installation and in the event that something does go wrong there’s no doubt that a local manufacturer is in a much better position to rectify the problem quickly and efficiently.

Tip No 5

Check Accreditations (Very Important!)

Many of our representatives highlighted the fact that many companies claim to provide certain standards that upon checking is just not true. Quality accreditations from world renowned organisations such as British Standards Institute (BSI) and British Board of Agrement (BBA) are proof positive that your supplier is making a serious commitment financially and also in terms of the product quality to ensure that you are delighted with your purchase. It is imperative that you ask every company to back up verbal claims with documentary evidence that they have certification, with the company name to back up their claims.

Tip No 4

Choose a Manufacturer

It has become much more common for window and door companies to become suppliers, sourcing their products for your home from anywhere in the UK and abroad. The down side to this type of deal is that often the window manufacturer will provide limited guarantees to your supplier and this can sometimes mean that you suffer from a poisoned purchase whereby the windows and doors supplied are guaranteed for ten years on the window or door profile but hinges and handles and glass units may only be covered for twelve months. In addition the knowledge and expertise required to build windows and doors provides a fantastic resource for all customers to tap in to when required.

Tip No 3

After Sales Service

When choosing a supplier it’s always important to ask yourself whether you feel confident that the firm you are considering will look after your products throughout the guarantee period. It has become fairly common practice for companies to reduce their guarantee responsibilities and this only becomes apparent when reading the detail of your agreement. In addition many companies make customers jump through hoops by insisting that all complaints must be put in writing causing unnecessary delays in responding to the problem. Give your supplier a real grilling about how service requests are handled and speak to as many relatives, friends and neighbours about their experiences. Quality firms always look at service requests as an opportunity to shine.

Tip No 2

Guarantees

Always check your guarantee! Most customers hope that they’ll only need to buy new windows and doors two or three times in their lifetime so it’s vital when weighing up different quotes that you check whether you have a fully comprehensive guarantee for at least a ten year period covering not only the products but also the fitting. Many customer focused companies also provide an insured guarantee which basically is an insurance policy which covers the guarantee should the company cease trading.

Tip No 1

Solid Reputation

Our Number 1 tip to ensure that you choose the best company to install your windows or doors is to check, check then check again. A good firm should always make you feel confident about their abilities to look after you and there is no stronger recommendation that you can receive than speaking to customers about their experiences. Not every single customer of a firm will be 100% satisfied however ask about the products and service and whether they would deal with the firm again. Good companies recognise the importance of happy customers and like to keep a solid reputation in order that the customer will recommend them and where possible, purchase more products.

Good luck with your improvements, and always bear these tips in mind! Stay away from cowboys and always shop around.
